The NATO Meritorious Service Medal is a decoration presented by the Secretary General of NATO to recognize NATO staff (military and civilian) who have displayed exemplary service and gone above and beyond expectations in ways that provide a positive influence on colleagues and NATO as a whole. General criteria are as follows: Performing an act of gallantry in the face of danger, demonstrating excellent leadership, providing exceptional service to a NATO programme or taking on personal hardship in the interest of NATO
